Frogs, Finn, and iMom

My thoughts on the short story, ” The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” and the way it was written was that I had no idea what was going on. I was so confused and the way it was written is kind of irritating because it makes you want to say the right word, but you can’t because you have to read it the way it is. The story itself was ehh, I didn’t find it really interesting in my opinion. The use of humor and satire was when Simon Wheeler made the narrator sit and listen to a story about unrealistic stuff to waste his time. The point the story was trying to make is to not judge a book by its cover because the narrator judged Simon Wheeler when he walked into the bar. I feel like “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” is going to be like the other short story and just hard to read. The only thing that I learned about this story is that it’s kind of like a sequel to “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and that Mark Twain wrote it. I think my perspective on the story will probably not be any different than it is now on the story. I feel like if we discuss the chapters that we have to read in class, I will be able to understand it more than I already do. My thoughts on the short film “iMom” had a little effect on me, but not a big one. For other people I think it will be an real eye opener for them and make them realize what this Earth has turned into over the past couple of years. What was being satirized in “iMom” was different kinds of parenting and also how a lot of people rely on technology for a lot of things. My reaction to the presentation and commentary it was making was kind of shocked because it showed that not even robots are perfect. That’s also because humans created them and we human beings can’t make anything perfect because nothing is perfect no matter how hard we try to make something that way.

Satire

Honestly, I didn’t know the word satire existed until we started talking about it in class. Now that I know what it is, I experience a lot of satire and humor in my daily life due to my family and friends. I feel like satire is used a lot now when talking about Trump because so many people think of him being the president as a joke.  The types of humor that I enjoy the most are physical and dark humor. A dark humor joke that I found online just now is, “I asked this pretty, young homeless woman if I could take her home. She smiled at me and said yes. The look on her face soon changed, however, when I walked off with her cardboard box.” This is the most appropriate dark humor joke that made me laugh a little bit. If I’m being honest all my jokes or things that I find funny are extremely horrible so if I was to put one on this blog, I would probably be sent to the guidance office lol. I also find physical humor funny, especially if it’s someone falling down the stairs or just falling in general. A story that I have of physical humor is when someone was at my house and they fell down my stairs. Then we went out to walk my dog and they fell on these stairs that were outside because they weren’t paying attention. I have no clue who Mark Twain is or what he does. I feel like I’ve heard his name before, but my memory is bad so I don’t know. One very interesting fact that I found about Mark Twain was that he was born a little after Halley’s Comet and died the day after it returned. His style of writing is different from other authors in his time. He would add satire to his writing, but you wouldn’t notice until you read the story for a second or third time. He also makes his stories feel realistic and like you are experiencing it with the people in the story.

Vertigo

Vertigo was a good movie, but I was so confused and it kinda made me not appeal to it. Like I never want to watch it ever again in my life. I was fine with watching the film in the beginning because that’s when the movie didn’t ruin anything, until Judy had her flashback about what really happened. That part made me confused and irritated because I barely knew how to comprehend all of it because it all happened so quick. My initial thoughts of Vertigo were that it was just going to be another one of those movies that try to mess with your head. I also thought that it was going to be boring and be really stupid and I was just going to be wasting my time watching it. I’m not gonna lie it was worth watching, but I never want to see it again because it made me extremely dumbfounded. My initial impression of the movie was that everything was going to be spinning and people were going to be passing out from it. I also thought the vertigo affect was going to be worse, but that honestly didn’t even make me feel like I was spinning with the character. What I liked about the film was how caring Midge was for Scotty even though he didn’t love her at all. She still stuck by him even when he was in love with another woman and just went with it kind of. There are many things that I didn’t like about Vertigo, but the one thing that irritated me the most was how unrealistic the falling body looked in the film. Even if it’s an already dead body, the arms and legs would still be flapping all over until it hit where it’s supposed too. I also didn’t like the ending of the movie because it wasn’t extremely different from what I was thinking, it’s just the fact that Gavin basically got away with murder and Scotty had to go through that traumatic event for the second time in his life. One change that I would definitely make for a modern audience is making the first fall more realistic other than it looking like a doll was thrown off a building. Another thing that I would change is how they dress and make it more modern of how people dress today.

Song of Myself

My initial impressions and reactions to Walt Whitman’s work was not that surprising. The poem was really deep and had a lot of meaning to it. My reaction to it is that a lot of people of almost all age groups can relate to it even though he started writing it when he was 37 years of age. My initial thoughts on the section my group was assigned was that it was going to be sad, but calm because it was the last couple lines. He’s basically talking about his last few days while being alive before dying because he uses all kinds of words that give hints that he’s talking about that. Whitman’s devotion to a Transcendentalist philosophy to his writing is that he thinks everything has a certain meaning to it and that everything through God is perfect. The most important lines the section that I was assigned are, ” who wishes to walk with me?/ will you speak before I am gone?will you prove already too late?”. The reason I think it’s important because if you look at the deeper meaning of it, it looks like he’s asking people to come to him and talk to him about their opinions of life or of him as a person. Or he’s wondering if people will follow his path of staying out of the fog and living a better life, focusing on yourself and everything around it with a better perspective. The lines also help develop theme because you can tell he is living his last few days on Earth. The difficulties I’m having with the work is trying to figure out the true meaning of each line of the poem because it was written in the 1800’s so their way of explaining things is different from ours. Also, transcendentalism is very hard for me to understand so this made it even harder to figure out what things meant while trying to break things down and see what everything means in each line of the poem.

Civil Disobedience

I don’t agree because what it’s basically saying is that the government shouldn’t do it’s job basically. That us citizens should be able to make the rules or decisions for our country, which could turn out really bad. The role of government is people who control and make decisions for a country. The role of government and it’s relation on citizens is that we get to make some of the decisions for the government and they either get vetoed or they go through with it. At least the people have a say in what goes on in what’s happening in their country. The government that respects your commands is basically a laissez faire government that doesn’t really control what people do with their businesses and respect their opinion. The reason why it’s that type of government is because it’s a hands off government so the people feel like they are in control of what happens. The role of civil disobedience for people to peacefully protest and if they act out, then you have to pay a fine or higher taxes for it. Yes it is still effective in modern times. People in this modern day of age still protest and there is sometimes they break out in riots, but then they know there’s prices to pay when they do. Protesting is a way for people to get their point across to the government about what they support or don’t support.

Thoreau’s Attempt

There are many connections that I can make between Thoreau’s thoughts and Emerson’s thoughts. Such as, how they feel about nature. They both think that everyone should appreciate the world around us and stop thinking so much about materialistic things.I think the main point of “Where I Lived and What I Lived For” is how we should appreciate nature and people shouldn’t be greedy, because there are people out there that have less than what they do. I feel like the main point of “The Conclusion” is explaining how we should be happy for what we have and that money isn’t always a necessity. Also, I think another main point in “The Conclusion” is that we should all take some time and try new things without electronics and away from the city. The benefits of Thoreau’s experiment would be that he’s closer to nature and would have a better connection with it. He could see how animals live and how it feels to have basically nothing while living in the woods through each season. If I was doing this experiment, I would probably miss the noise. I feel like it’s really quiet in the woods and you would hear every little thing which could be scary. I would also miss electricity and plumbing because if you’re in the woods it gets very dark and that could scare some people because they won’t know what’s going on. I don’t think I could do this experiment because there are some scary things in the woods. I think a lesson that modern people should take out of Transcendentalism is that they should put down their phones and enjoy nature. The reason why I think this is because everyone nowadays is glued to their phones and doesn’t take the time out of their day to go and smell the flowers or just enjoy the outside.

End of Argument

My thoughts have changed about how to construct an argument by the end of this unit. The reason why we argue is to prove that we are right about a certain topic or because we disagree with something. You should are when you disagree with something or trying to get your point across on why you are right. When arguing, you shouldn’t scream at each other, you should let one person get their point across at a time and then come to an agreement at the end. The way I argue is to get my point across to the other person and tell them my opinion on a situation. The way some of the people I’m around construct arguments is they don’t actually. They usually say whatever to try to hurt the other person so they can win the argument. Some adults give out good points why their right and some of them try to tell you why you’re wrong. To develop a valid argument you have to use logical statements and you should put emotional statements in there too because it could affect how the other person feels. My thoughts have changed a lot from the start of the topic to now. I just thought arguments were people just saying petty things until they got there point across or until the other person just gave up and agreed with them. What has changed is how to construct an argument, I can get the point across by telling my main point and then adding logic to it. My experience with developing a persuasive speech was pretty difficult. There was a lot of work and research that had to be put into it. I wanted to get my point across, but without sounding dumb or like I didn’t know what I was talking about. The hardest part was trying to do the constructive since it had to be a certain amount of time to say it so if you talked fast, you had to type more out so that you could at least reach the time limit. It was also hard when I didn’t agree with my topic because I had to pretend like I cared about the drinking age being lowered, when I really thought it should stay the same.

Topic Selection and First Thoughts

My topic for this debate is drinking age of 18. My assigned position is pro. No, it’s not my personal position on this topic, I’m against lowering it. There is a majority of people that want the drinking age to be lowered because at the age of 18 you’re considered an adult. With the basic google search of this topic all that came up were pros and cons of why the drinking age should be lowered or why it shouldn’t. A logical approach for my side of the argument would be that in 1971 the drinking age was lowered from 21 to 18 because they thought if 18 is old enough to go to war then they should be old enough to drink alcohol. An ethical issue is that everyone assumes that once we turn 18, we are legally an adult so we should have the right to drink too. The emotions that can be brought to play are towards college students. They drink more than a lot of adults and a majority of them are 18 and younger than 21. They know how it feels to have to drink illegally and they fear the consequences of getting caught. The college students also probably are thinking that they should lower the drinking the age because they are adults and should have the rights to be able to buy alcohol at that age, if they’re allowed to buy tobacco products and make their own life choices. There are many teenagers that consume alcohol before they even turn 18 and in many European countries there the drinking age is 18. In Canada the drinking age is 16, so that means that there are teenagers that can drink responsibly or learn how to before they turn the legal age.

Changes

part 1; A current issue is legalizing marijuana. Some people think it’s a getaway drug that could lead to hardcore drugs. Other people think it should be legalized because alcohol is legal and that’s a drug. There aren’t really main reasons except that many people are for it because people already use marijuana without it being legalized. The people that are against just think that if it gets legalized, more people will use it and have health issues in the long run. I’m on the side for the government to legalize marijuana because it could also be used for health purposes and help many people. Also, it makes no sense to keep it illegal because so many people in the United States already use it and there are some states that already legalized it. Such as, Alaska, Colorado, and California. Also, you can’t overdose on marijuana like you can with other drugs sooooo yea.  That’s why the government should legalize it because it’s stupid for so many people going to jail for smoking weed.

Part 2; Now that it is 2019, I’m still not going to be happy to be at school. The school year has sucked so far and my grades keep going downhill. I mean not going to lie, I’ve had some good days in that place. Other than that school has been horrible. I’ve been carefree and less motivated, like I don’t even wanna do this blog right now. If I could change anything about how my school year has gone, it would be actually trying to keep my grades up. I would like to improve on my motivation to actually do my classwork and keeping my grades up. I could probably stop procrastinating and do my work on time. I could also try not to get distracted in class and do what I’m supposed to do. Something I could do today or this week is getting some sleep so that I don’t choose my sleep over homework, like I always seem to do. What could prevent me from making this change is not having the motivation to do any of my homework and just sleeping.

Virtues

Well I pretty much failed at all of the virtues (except for maybe two) even though I wasn’t keeping track at all for a week, but I just know. The two virtues that I failed at probably the whole week was resolution and silence. I’ve had no motivation for anything since the second day of school, so I obviously had a hard time with resolution. That is exactly why this blog is done a couple days late because I decided to pick sleep over doing my homework. I also failed at sincerity because you know how its basically think before you speak, well aha. I had a hard time with that because people really irritate me throughout the day and yea. The easiest one to follow was cleanliness because it’s honestly not that hard to take a shower everyday and keep yourself clean. Another one that was easy to follow was tranquility because I always ignore people to begin with so it wasn’t that hard to keep up with this virtue. The hardest virtue to follow was industry. In the 21st, almost everyone has some kind of cellular device right in their pocket at all times. I don’t there’s one person in this world that doesn’t use technology like a cellphone or computer. I honestly didn’t even try to follow this one because I knew I was going to fail at it. I tried to read an actual paper book, but I just couldn’t and decided I would watch Netflix and finish a whole season of whatever show I’m into at the moment. For the first two days though I did think about what good I did those days. I actually did do some good things like made someone smile and did what I had to do around the house without my mom telling me. After those first two days is when I kind of just gave up and started thinking of Christmas break. This whole thing was really hard especially if you didn’t keep track of it. I’ll probably never do it again and just go about my days.
