Blog 22: Citizen Kane

I did not like this film. It was dumb. That was my reaction to the film. It was bad and ugly for so many reasons. Like honestly whoever came up with its story line must’ve had no life because who would even have the time to think of something that dumb. It was seriously a waste of my time I’m not going to lie. Also I’m just not a big fan of really old films/ movies like that they are all pretty bad. The main theme we were supposed to take away from that money doesn’t solve all your problems and you can’t buy happiness, as you could see Kane try to do in the film but it unfortunately did not work obviously. So that’s why he was unhappy the whole time because he was trying to make people love him with his money but it really wasn’t working for the poor dude. The whole key figure of the story was about one stupid word, Rosebud. I think that his damn sleigh was the only thing that he ever loved and that is sad considering he lived his whole life and his last word was freaking rosebud. That is just pathetic in my opinion but whatever why don’t they go make another dumb movie about it. Also I thought it was pretty sad that his mother like really didn’t care to give her son up, she had literally no emotion. That was also most likely another reason why he couldn’t be happy because he never really had a motherly figure that also tells us why he treated women so badly… sorry I just had to put that out there. Another reason why he couldn’t be happy was because I personally don’t think he ever knew how to love except for loving his stupid sleigh but that doesn’t count. So basically him growing up without any love but with a ton of money ruined his life. So there ya have it kids, money does not buy you happiness but it may buy you lots of things that you think would make you happy but they never will. Like I personally think some money would make me very happy but not that much money because that is just too much to handle at a time.

“we’re done with poetry” -Michael McGarry

So all their themes are pretty negative to be honest, like none of them are happy. For example in “Rappaccini’s Daughter”the themes are related to the biblical conflict between good and evil, and some of the specific themes are: faith and trust, revenge, presence of morality, and solitude and isolation. Then in “Disillusionment of 10 o’clock” refers to the feeling of regret and loss that occurs each night at bedtime. This shows in the poem because when the old sailor, drunk and asleep in his boots, with no help for anyone to dress him for bed, realizes he is alone. So then the theme for “anyone lived in a pretty how town” is death. Cummings wants you to be aware of the fact that death exists and that you are going to die someday. They all tie together in the fact that they all associate with death and loneliness. The two that I find would be the most applicable to our society today are “Disillusionment of 10 o’clock” and “Rappaccini’s Daughter” because they both are sort of very similar when you think about it. They relate to each other because the one talks about loneliness and the other talks about trust and revenge, these correlate because if you don’t have trust or you want to revenge then you could feel very lonely. This can apply to our society because it seems like everybody feels either lonely or depressed because they “can’t” trust people or they just don’t like people and want to plan revenge on them because everybody is petty nowadays. The poem that I hated the least was “Disillusionment of 10 o’clock” because it was short and sweet and got straight to the point and that how I like them. Also I’m going to be frank with you, if a poem is 25 PAGES LONG it is no longer a poem that sucker is a novel. Like I don’t care if it is easy to follow, if it is longer than 5 pages I do not have time for it. That’s the tea sis.

Blog 20: Frogs, Frogs, and Frogs

I actually enjoyed ready the short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County ” because it was easy to read. I also liked the use of satire in it because it made it humorous. Another thing I liked about it was the way it was written because it was interesting with the different dialects of different characters. Also the way the story moved in order to get to the end point was unique because it went through different stories. For Huck Finn I anticipate the same kind of use of the different dialects like in the frog short story and that’ll make it more interesting and easier to read so you’ll know who’s talking. I sincerely know nothing about this story because I am uncultured but I would assume it’ll be humorous like the other story but what do I know. The short film we watched, iMom, was very interesting let me tell ya. It had an eerie sense and threw you very off guard at the end, which was disgusting by the way. Even though I didn’t like how it ended I did like how it used satire on parenting and our use of technology and those were the qualities of the short film that gave it just a bit of humor. I also like how the actual moms and dads were like talking in the interview things that made it pretty funny also.

Blog 19: Satire

Well I didn’t know I had experience with satire at first because I never knew it was even a thing, but I actually enjoy it a lot. I usually enjoy it in parody videos about different people, especially Donald trump. It’s just so easy to make fun of him and its hilarious. I think I enjoy burlesque humor the most. This kind of humor is when people are mocking others and ridicules by imitating with caricature or exaggerating characterization. I think I like this the most because people usually make these kinds of videos about a person or a group of people that a LOT of people don’t like. Also it makes the videos even better when the people who the videos are about kind of feed into them like saying they don’t like them. So I have no idea who Mark Twain is so I’m going to go look him up now (you probably mentioned him on Friday when i wasn’t there). Okay so he wrote humorous novels that makes sense. Oh and he was also an inventor and invented the memory builder. He was the sixth child, he witnessed a lot of death throughout his life. He only went to school until 12 years old then had to get a job to help support the family because his father died. At age 15 he got a job as a printer and the occasional writer. The at age 21 he had fulfilled his dream. I find it very interesting that he originally didn’t want to be a full time writer, he wanted to be a pilot of a steamboat and he was for a little bit. He was a licensed pilot by 1859 and found regular employment plying the shoals and channels of the great river. It says that he really loved his career. But then after he started working as a reporter and that’s what got him more into writing, and then by age 34 he had become one of the most popular and famous writers in America. Not going to lie he really had a good life (after his childhood) he knew what he wanted to do and he would just go and do it and that’s why he was so successful in life and I really admire that.

Blog 18: poor Midge

So this film was pretty good at what it explained it was going to. I just wasn’t a fan of the characters. They were dumb, very dumb especially Scotty. My initial thoughts on “Vertigo” was that I was mad at the end. I couldn’t believe how it ended it was so annoying. Scotty was also very annoying throughout the whole film. He was also a horndog and fell in love with who he thought was his friends wife. I really liked the beginning of this film but when Scotty started to be creepy I started to hate it. He was like a 50 year old man going after a 30 year old woman WHO WAS MARRIED… I just can’t get over that. *gags* Also poor Midge she was always there for Scotty through everything and she got nothing because he was literally to psycho to see what he really had in front of him, like how dumb could he really be. I just really don’t understand what was going on in this guys head the whole time because he was straight crazy. Well the first thing I think everybody would change would be the animations and make them more modern because they’re really bad. I would also not make Scotty so old (just for my comfort obviously) and maybe not make him so dumb. The animation thingys are the most important things that need to be fixed because when you watch it now it just looks cheaply made and really really old and that doesn’t appeal to the modern audience. Also another thing I would change would be that part right at the end when Scotty tried to change Judy into Gavin’s wife because nowadays that wouldn’t be socially acceptable. Woman now would not like to see that in a movie its not like that anymore. Those are pretty much my only critics about making it more modern because other than those things it does a pretty good job at being a psychological thriller. I also was just a bit furious at the end of this film, it made me very mad.

Blog 17: Not a fan of poetry

So first of all I really don’t like poetry in general so of course I didn’t like this poem. Well I had some real reasons for this too. This poem was really hard to understand because I feel like you could definitely interpret it in different ways. My group got section 6. This section was pretty long but it wasn’t that bad to interpret. Once I knew that grass equaled society it all started to make sense a little more. Transcendentalism affected his writing in many ways. He constantly talked about how he was trying to make himself the best he could be and he also talked about how the society is constantly trying to be better than its been. He also says that society will never grow to get better and better without everybody together trying to be the best people they could be because in order for society to grow the people have to first. I think one of the most important lines from our section is “And to die is different from what any one supposed, and luckier.” I believe this is one of the most important lines because this ties it all together pretty much telling us that when we die at the best we could’ve made ourselves then our bodies will go to the earth and help grow and help make new generations and their societies better themselves. This line also tells us that we shouldn’t be afraid to die you should celebrate it as a ways to help the upcoming generations. So he makes you think that when you die its not pointless because you’ll always help the earth. I had multiple difficulties while reading this because I feel like I knew what was going on  but at the same time I would second guess myself and think I was going about it in all the wrong ways. So then when I finally started to understand it I really didn’t think that much into it as I should’ve Also I’m really not a fan of poetry and reading it only because you can take one poem and understand it in so many different ways so I feel like there’s never really a right answer when understanding a poem.

Blog 16: Civil Disobedience

Honestly I feel like I do believe that “that government is best which governs least?” because sometimes the government just shouldn’t get involved in some things, but then again it only seems like they never get involved when they are really need and they just focus on things they shouldn’t be. The role of government is supposed to be that they make major decisions and help and keep the people safe. Its role in relation to individual citizens is in my eyes to just makes their lives easier for them. I feel like almost all governments command your respect. I think that the reason why they do this is so the government can feel more in control of us all (it makes them feel better about themselves). The role of civil disobedience today is a lot of people are constantly protesting the government because they believe that the government does not do enough for us citizens (which is sometimes very true. Yes this is still very effective, well at least I think it is but some people do not agree with me. protesting gives us a sense of a voice against the government and so then maybe they will hear us and take our thoughts into consideration. In this guys work he talks about hoe eventually we shouldn’t have a government because it does nothing for us and that we should start this off by speaking up about our opinions. He pretty much is just telling us how bad the government is throughout the whole thing then at the end tells us to rebel because we technically do not need a government. Kind of talks about it like it just a waste of space. I think that we should have a government but I do believe that they should do a little bit more for us citizens and not get into stuff that they should not be

Blog 15: Thoreau’s Attempt

Not going to lie I literally almost fell asleep while reading  these excepts, it was a struggle getting through them. There was one really clear connection between Thoreau’s thoughts and Emerson’s to me. The connection is that Emerson talked about how nothings perfect and that everybody should want to be unique and that you should embrace your own uniqueness, then Thoreau talked about how you should care what king of how you live in whether its nice or not the only thing that matters are the memories made and the quality of life. To me they were pretty much say something very similar but just using different analogies to get the point across. I think they both mean that you shouldn’t care how different you are you should just care about making yourself happy and make good memories to remember while your’e at it. The beginning portion and the conclusion are very much connected. It starts off with him gazing at the water to then burrowing into the earth, just as expert shows a progress from observation to contemplation. There could be so many benefits of leaving society behind, like then you would have to live up to its social standards and you could just be yourself. Also another benefit would be that then there would be constant anxiety from the societies environment. Honesty if I were to do this I would miss my phone of course because I like to be in the loop of things, I would also miss seeing what the ridiculous social standard would be because sometimes they’re a bit extra and it funny. Even though I would miss a lot of thing I think I could definitely do it and it would probably be good for me to just get away from societies stresses for a little bit, actually it would probably help a lot of people when I think about it. I think the big thing that modern readers should take out of this should be that nothing will ever be perfect, especially people. They should also take out of this that its okay to be unique because that’s what nature intended.

Blog 14: End of Argument

As you may know I like to argue. About little things, big things you name it, but when it came to this argument I actually did not want to for once (which is a surprise I know). In the beginning of this unit I really did not know how hard it is to create a good real argument, but while I was trying to make it I learned that very quickly. I also quickly realized that I use a lot of appeal to emotion and ad hominem in my everyday arguments so when I was writing this real one it was very hard trying to catch myself from using those fallacies. I also learned that I am not as good at arguing as I thought I was originally. I definitely do think about argument differently now and I give props to whoever has to argue like that all the time because it is not as fun as my type of arguing. Trying to make this argument was pretty difficult because like I said before I use a lot of ad hominem and appeal to emotion and that is a bit of a problem when it comes to this kind of argument. Honestly not going to lie I probably did not catch all of those fallacies because it is really hard to see them, well at least to me it is. This experience writing this speech was so hard I hated it. I feel like if we were to have actually debate in class it would have maybe been a bit easier only because I would have the chance to listen to the other sides argument and get to ask questions based off of what they said also it would have made writing the rebuttal a lot easier, but at the same time I am glad we did not have to do the debate in class because I might have been a bit nervous. I also was excited to be able to dress up but now I can’t but it is fine I would rather not have the debate in class.

Blog 13: Single Payer Healthcare-Pro

So I got single payer healthcare. I got the pro side of this debate topic. My personal position on this is I am on the pro side because I believe this should be a thing and it definitely will be in a couple of years. I don’t know much about this topic yet but what I do know is that everyone will have the same benefits like when you get sick or hurt and you go to the hospital you won’t have to pay but then taxes will go up but that is fine because it will be helping a lot of people. It annoys me to think that people will get mad that the taxes will raise even tho it will help so many families but they don’t care because they’re ignorant. When I google this just a bunch of news articles on it pop up and they all pretty much say the same things over and over again. A logical approach on this would be that this will help so many families because now they will have insurance when usually they wouldn’t. Well this topic is mostly a pro than a con in my eyes but that doesn’t mean that there still aren’t little flaws in it. So this could be good and bad for families with little money because with then they would have to pay for insurance but then they would also have to pay more taxes and they might need that money but that is still better than spending a fortune on one hospital stop. There a lot of emotions about single payer healthcare because there will always be people who don’t like good things that could help people because they’re stingy and don’t want to “waste their money” although they most likely don’t need it as much as some families need free healthcare. Some people just need to get over themselves and realize that so many families need this help and there money will be very well spent. Some people also need to realize that this doesn’t just help the adults it helps the kids get what they need medically too.
