In my opinion, the theme of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, Disillusionment of 10 o’clock, and anyone lived in a pretty how town is that we all follow a pattern and if we follow other people, it will lead us to a lonely life.  If you go out on your own and be your own person, you will live a happy life.  A lot of people my age are guilty of this because day in and day out we go through very similar patterns, such as school and sports after school.  It is nice to have some change at times, which is what these poems are trying to portray to us.  The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock develops its theme when it says, “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.”   This line is very important because it shows how his life is so boring and monotonous, and its just the same thing day in and day out and that is no way to live a life.  Disillusionment of 10 o’clock develops its theme when the author talks about how people have a choice in what they wear to sleep every night, but they all wear the same thing anyways.   In the poem, anyone lived in a pretty how town, anyone stood for a male character and no one stood for a female character.  Without knowing these two things, I could not fully understand the poem, which is exactly what the author wanted.  He wanted us to dig deeper and find the real meaning on our own instead of just giving it away.

These three poems are all connected due to how many people in our society follow the lead of others, rather than defining themselves through their own actions.  All of these poems have the same overall theme, but are developed in different ways.

The poem that I find most applicable to our society is The Love Song of  J. Alfred Prufrock because of the way that “coffee spoons” is so prevalent in our society and how he compares his life with coffee spoons.  This makes us realize just how many of us are exactly like that man, finding our life so small and boring, not living our own life and being who we truly are.  This poem was also my favorite of the three because it was very eye opening to me and made me really think of how my life could be so much different.

The novel Huck Finn was a very interesting novel.  There were a lot of surprises throughout the story that took me in a complete turn.  There were also some things that took place that were completely and utterly stupid.  One example of that is when Tom decided to break Jim out in order to put Jim right back where he was.  That made zero sense to me.  The book was a little better than expected, since it was written so long ago.  What made it not over the top for me was that it was harder to read due to “dialect” or language that it was written in.  It definitely did accomplish its job with the themes, especially Southern Romanticism within Tom’s character.  This novel compares to other novels that I have read as being more well written than most that I have.  The end of the book was very relieving that Jim was finally “free” from the farm, even though we find out that Miss Watson died and Jim was free the whole time.  I would change the way that Jim gets freed because it did not make any sense to have such an elaborate plan, when one- Jim was already free and two- there was such an easier way to get him out.  I would say that the most important thing to take away from this novel is how Tom acts.  He knows that Jim is already free, but tells Huck that he will help free him to make it look like he has changed, when in reality he just wants to have an adventure and is hiding the truth about Jim from his friends.  Yes, the novel does still apply to our society today because we do not do things that are morally correct, but instead do what society tells us is the “cool” thing to do.  Our Huck Finn project is going to be a LIFE Game board with different situations depending on what square you land on.  We picked this project because the game itself is relevant to the novel and then we can make our own twist to it to represent the book very well.  Our expectations are to get a really good grade, while representing Huck Finn well while making a game that can be played by multiple people.

The most important parts of chapters 30-33 of Huck Finn are when the gold is found in the coffin, when Huck goes to the raft and Jim is not there, and when Tom arrives at his aunt and uncle’s farm.  The gold being found is important because it allowed the characters to escape and also caused tension between the Duke and the dauphin.  Jim missing from the raft is important because it leads Huck on a new adventure to find him since he was taken.  Finally, Tom arriving is very important because Huck is reunited with his best friend, and Tom decides to help him get Jim back.  The new characters that we meet are Sally the mistress and Silas Phelps.  They were Tom’s aunt and uncle and they were holding Jim on their farm.  Huck and Tom have further development in these chapters.  Huck considers going to Hell in order to free Jim and Tom agrees to help Huck, even though in the beginning of the novel he is totally for slavery.  What we know about the farm is that it is where the slaves are kept and they work to grow cotton.  I think the plot line is moving towards something big.  I think there is going to be a lot of action when they try and free Jim because the overall feeling of the novel is very suspenseful.  My prediction for the end is that Huck will free Jim and Jim will become a free man at last and reunite with his family, while Huck overcomes his immaturity completely and becomes a man.

My selected author for my IR this quarter is Robert Matheson.  I chose this author because he is known as one of the most prolific horror story writers of his time.  I read a lot of reviews on his books and all of them were good and hinting to me that I should read one of his books.  His primary form of work is novels.  This impacted my consideration because I really enjoy a good horror novel.  The three most interesting works by this author are Hell House, I Am Legend, and The Beardless Warriors.  What is interesting about Hell House is that two people are hired by a dying billionaire to investigate life after death, which is very intriguing.  What is interesting about I Am Legend is it is about a deadly disease that people are trying to find the cure to.  Lastly, what is interesting about the Beardless Warriors is that it is based off the author’s time as an infantry man in WWII.  Matheson was born in 1926 and lived through WWII.  He published his first novel at age 8!  He went to the University of Missouri.  He wrote a lot of novels and short stories, until 2013 when he sadly died.

The book Huckleberry Finn is a book like I have never read before.  The author, Mark Twain, is one of the greatest American authors in history.  When I first starting reading Huck Finn, it was really hard to read the text since it has so many misspellings to make it seem how they would talk back in the day.  The book is definitely a lot better than I expected it to be.  The plot within the story is very fascinating and the fact that Huck Finn is only twelve or thirteen, is intriguing due to all of the things he does.  I like how Huck can “think on his feet” just like when he did at the log cabin in the woods with his dad.  He used blood from another source and placed it inside the cabin for his father to see when he woke up.  In doing this, it made it seem as if he was captured by somebody and taken away, most likely dead.  Since his dad would think he was dead, he was free to go and travel as he pleased because no one would go looking for him if he was dead.  This was one of the ways that Huck thought on his feet throughout the first several chapters of the book.  What I really thought was weird was that Huck did certain things in order to get punished with a beating.  He deliberately missed school so that the teacher would beat him when he went back.  This was during the time that he was living with the Widow Douglas and he was so accustomed to getting beat by Pap Finn, that he was not used to the lifestyle of living with the Widow.  I understand why he did that, and why he was not used to a lifestyle of not being abused, but I could not wrap my head around the fact that a kid who is being abused, would purposefully do something to want to get abused more.  It does not make any sense to me, and this was the only part of the book that I was truly confused about.

The short story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” was written very well and it intrigued me.  It was interesting how the story described Simon Wheeler as dumb, bald, and a moron, where in reality he was actually very clever and even made remarks that made fun of the narrator.  Also, when Jim Smiley, who would bet and trick everybody so he would win, got to the dog fight, I thought the humor was excellent when he had to fight a dog with only two legs.  First of all, Jim’s dog couldn’t win because he won by latching onto the two back legs and also a dog could not really survive with only two legs.

The way we handled independent reading in the 3rd quarter was really good, I liked it a lot.  I liked how I got some class time to catch up on my reading and I liked the way we got to interact with our classmates after we read.  I also liked getting some points towards our grade for being prepared and reading in class.  It helped me a lot with my reading and understanding of my book.

My first impressions on Huck Finn are that I really enjoy it so far.  It has been a good read through the first chapter and I am interested as to how it will end.  I think this story will be about his adventures being in a robber gang with Tom Sawyer.  The type of story this will be is that of adventure along with a lot of action.

My experience with satire and humor is TV and comedian related.  The humor type that I like the most is self-enhancing humor.  Self-enhancing humor is being able to joke with yourself and find the good humor in everyday life.  An example is

Mark Twain was an American writer who wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.  His writing style is part of what made him so successful.  His use of social commentary is much more subtle than than the satire of other writers.  Something that I find very interesting is that his book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was based on a real person.  That person was a young misfit who float down the Mississippi River with a slave named Jim.  I cannot wait to read that book.

The film Vertigo, by Alfred Hitchcock, is a very unique film.  Part of it being unique is due to the fact that it was made in 1958 and I am used to movies made in the 2000’s.  I thought that there were some parts that were kind of odd and strange, but there were also some parts that were interesting to me.  One thing that I liked in the film was the murder scene and the way that Gavin tricked Scottie with who really fell out that window and died.  That seems kind of odd that I would like that scene, but it is the kind of thing that I enjoy watching in films.  Another part of the movie that I really liked was right at the end when the nun came up the stairs and spooked Judy, and then rang the bell.  I liked it because at the time it was totally random and thought it was quite funny actually.  Something that I didn’t like, though, was how awkward Hitchcock was when he dressed up Judy in the exact same clothes and makeup to look like Madeline.  It was kind of a little creepy the way he did that.  Also the kissing scenes were way too fake, it seemed as if they were licking each other’s cheeks.  It was very weird.  My critique of the film was overall pretty decent, but there were some things that could have been better.  What could have been better was the acting.  The acting seemed almost fake at times and was just too predictable to me.  Also, the music was effective at times, but other times I think it could have been better especially when the two women fall out of the window.  There could have been some better dramatic music and maybe some dark and eerie music also.  Overall, the film was good besides not being able to watch the first half of it.

End of Song

The poem, “Song of Myself,” was a very one and I came to understand why it is considered one of the best in American literature.  It was amazing to me how one thing in the poem, means something totally different and could be interpreted in many different ways depending on your viewpoint.  My favorite section other than my own is section nine.  I like that section the best because it talks about jumping off of the top of a barn into some hay.  He was very joyful and proud of himself and his accomplishments.  He was acting like a child and I liked this part of the poem because it reminds us that every once and a while we need to act like a child and just have fun and forget all of our troubles in life.  This poem is definitely one of the most influential poems of American literature and there are elements of the poem that are still reflected in our society today.  I see some of these specific elements in section six where it says ” It may be you are from old people, or from offspring taken soon out of their mothers’ laps.”  What this means is that the mother is the nurturer, everyone in society is connected somehow, and society is driven by everyone.  All of these are true still to this day in our society.  Another statement from section six that contributes to society is “And to die is different from what any one supposed, and luckier.”  This statement from the poem means that each individual’s death contributes to our society in some way and that is still true to this day.  A death affects a lot of things and a lot of people.  Some questions I have about the work is what year did this poem become and be considered such a classic of American literature?  Another question that I have is who was the first person to ever read “Song of Myself” besides Walt Whitman?  I would rate this poem as a nine out of ten after fully dissecting it, it was a very good read.

The work “Civil Disobedience” by Thoreau discussed government throughout the essay.  In his essay there is a line that says, “that government is best which governs least.”  I believe this means that the government is best when it is least involved in people’s everyday lives.  I sort of agree with this statement.  I agree because I feel that as more laws are being created and adapted and the more things get strict, the more that people will tend to disobey them.  Also, some of the laws that are put in place are very unnecessary, while other things need laws and do not have them.  Although I think that laws need to have more of a balance, I do believe that the government still needs to play somewhat of a major role in our society to keep the world from turning to utter chaos.  The role of government is to create laws and also put restrictions on what we can and cannot do in order to keep everybody safe.  Even though most people would say that citizens are going to break the laws anyways, making things illegal will still prevent even more people from breaking those laws.  All in all, citizens are supposed to follow the rules set in place by the government.  Another line that Thoreau states is, “Let every man make known what kind of government would command his respect, and that will be one step toward obtaining it. . .”  A government that would command people’s respect would be a government that was the most strict when it came to punishment, such as life in prison or the death penalty for even the most minor crime committed.  The government would get the people’s respect because they would be in fear of being punished and would not want to commit any crimes due to that fear.  Protests are still continuing to happen all over the world to this day, many imitating the style of figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi.  The role of civil disobedience today is to create awareness to the cause that people are trying to worship.  It is effective because it is harmless and no one gets in trouble while bringing people to realize the problems they wish to protest.  The only way civil disobedience is not effective is when it turns violent and into riots.
