AR Book Review

The book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins was published by Scholastic Press on September 14th 2008. It was published in New York, New York. This book became an instant hit drawing in all ages. I believe overall the book was very well written, very entertaining, and action packed.

The main character of the book The Hunger Games is a young 16 year old Katniss Everdeen. She is a very skilled hunter and has a great shot when it comes to archery. Young Katniss lives with her mother and her sister Prim, age 12, since her father died. The family belongs to district 12, the coal mining region. Every year the Capitol of Panem holds the Hunger games. This event is where two tributes, one boy and one girl, from each of the 12 districts must come to an arena and fight to the death and only one person will win. During the selection process Katniss’ sister Prim is selected as one of the tributes for district 12. Knowing she has to save her sister Katniss volunteers in her place. The other tribute from district 12 is a young man named Peeta.

During the opening ceremonies Katniss and Peeta are dressed in fire outfits. They are also allowed to practice their archery skills in training before the games officially begin. As soon as the games begin Katniss realizes that Peeta has abandoned her and teamed up with the strong rich kids. Peeta and the kids corner her and force her into a tree not allowing her to come back down. With her smart thinking she notices a tracker jacker nest and cuts the branch containing it causing it to be dropped onto Peeta and his gang below. During this she manages to get her hands on a bow and an arrow. Soon she finds herself teaming up with a young girl named Rue from district 11. Together they completely destroy the Career tributes food supply. In the meantime Peeta doesn’t appear to be teamed up with the rich kids anymore. Katniss doesn’t know where he’s at or who he’s with but all she knows is he is not with them. Soon Rue is killed by one of the Career Tributes and Katniss is on her own again. Soon the announcer changes the rule of the game saying that 2 people from a single district can win. Katniss frantically searches for Peeta.

When Katniss finds Peeta he is wounded but she nurses him back to health. If they could pretend to have a romance they could get gifts from their sponsors which would help keep them alive. Soon it is Peeta and Katniss against the last remaining tribute Cato. Soon they are faced with wild dogs and Katniss shoots Cato into the pack. The dogs ripped him to pieces. Soon after Cato’s death the announcer decides the rule of only one winner is back on. Neither Katniss nor Peeta will kill one another so they agree to eat poisonous berries at the same time causing them both to die. Right before they put the berries in their mouths the announcer comes back on saying they have won the Hunger Games. Eventually Katniss finds out that Peeta is actually in love with her. To end the book they step hand and hand off the train and onto the Platform.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is an action packed story for all ages. Readers feel as if they are in the Hunger Games themselves when reading this novel. It is a quick and enjoyable read leaving readers wanting more, which is why Suzanne Collins continued the series. Overall this book is a fantastic read for anyone.

Looking For Alaska

Looking For Alaska is a John Green novel that was published on March 3rd 2005 by Dutton Children’s Books. This novel was published in New York, New York. I personally believe that this book is an excellent read and one of my favorite books of all time. It is filled with suspense and mystery and is a quick read.

A young man by the name of Miles Halter is the main character in the novel. He is attending Culver Creek boarding school for his junior year of highschool. Miles becomes friends with a girl named Alaska, and two boys named Colonel and Takumi. The friends smoke, prank and cause mischief together. Miles falls madly in love with Alaska but she has a boyfriend who’s at college. Meanwhile a girl named Lara likes Miles and wishes she had a chance with him. One night Miles and Alaska were playing truth or dare while drinking. Alaska gets a call and suddenly she runs to her car and drives off campus. The following morning Miles is informed that Alaska had died in a car accident the night before. Miles was heartbroken and had many questions surrounding the death so the friends start to search for answers. Takumi suddenly remembers that it was the day Alaska’s mother died and realizes she went to her mother’s gravesite. It was unsure if Alaska intended it to be a suicide or just an accident. To answer the prompt of how to get out of the labyrinth Miles gives an answer Alaska would have liked. In the end, Miles comes to peace with Alaska’s death. He knows he will never understand her fully but will always remember her.

This book brings a lot of suspense especially when Miles and his friends are searching for clues to Alaskas death. The reader feels sorrow for Miles having to deal with such a loss. This book will make you feel many emotions and have you on the edge of your seat. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes a suspenseful novel.
